The prize, which has been occasionally awarded since 1992, recognizes Canadian artists who have achieved exemplary success on the international scene and have contributed to the influence of Canadian music.

Mendes, born in Pickering, a Toronto suburb and just 23 years old, has already won 11 Juno Awards and has been nominated for several Grammy Awards. In a statement, he said receiving the honor next month will be a moment surreal.

Previously, Arcade Fire, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Drake, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain received the Juno International Achievement Award.

The 51st Juno Awards will be held in Toronto on May 15 at the Budweiser Outdoor Stage.
