Antonio Banderas put on the suit, sword and hat of the The cat with the boots to give voice and one last chance to Hollywood’s most famous feline: he lived eight lives intensely as a hero and now he has only one left in his new animated adventure, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
In this installment, the cat “must be very careful what he does, because it’s like human beings“Thus, Banderas explains in an interview with the EFE news agency, he decides to retire: “Before he could have been a hero, but not anymore”.
“This cat has lived beyond his means because he has a gift that humans don’t have and that is, in the case of America, he has nine lives, not sevenlike it happens in Spain, and suddenly he realizes he still has one,” says the actor.
“He buries his boots, his sword and still ‘sails’ through life, grows a beard and falls into a sort of depression until he discovers there is a way to get their lives back: but what happens is that what the future holds for him is not what he asks for, but something better.”
Even the Spanish artist, born in 1960, has expressed a wish for 2023, even if he is not sure that the future will pay attention to it: “I wish we all let go of the “me” a little bit. and focus a little more on ‘we'”.
“We don’t listen to each other, each of us is locked up in our own plot and we put a shell around it, and I’m right and you’re not, and that’s it. And that’s how it goes…”, the actor complains, without forcing his voice, almost in a whisper, protecting his throat for the three-hour performance that awaits him in Madrid, where he recites his hit for a few days Agency.
“I understand it”, says the Spaniard Rosario Flores at his side, “because singers are affected by everything, by any feeling, by anything. And the anguish of not falling ill…”.
The actress and singer, who worked on the orders of the director Pedro Almodóvar in the movie Talk to herwhere he played a bullfighter, nicknamed in Spanish to mother moonhis first work in animation, an eccentric and funny character who takes care of the main cat in one of his worst moments.
“The truth is, when I saw her, I fell in love with her,” says the singer. “She’s a wonderful little crazy; how she wears that hair of hers – laughs the singer as she lifts the locks of her unruly curls – of hers, how she lives with those cats, how she cuddles them, how she talks to them “.
“I’ve always loved cinema, I belonged to it and it’s inside me,” he explains.
“And when they called me to dub Mam Luna (…), participating in a film like this, which is a new experience, was a real gift for me,” he adds.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a new cartoon sequel to the saga Shrekwhere Banderas has already played the feline that appeared in the second episode (2004).
The character was so well received that he was included in two other installments of the saga and had a solo filmwhich was released to great acclaim in 2011.
After 20 years with him, Banderas believes Puss in Boots may have “touches” of his own. “But there are probably more things that I’ve adopted from him,” he admits.
This character has many gestures, features and movements of Banderas himself, despite being a classic animated film 3D and 2Dwithout “stop motion”, but which has an explanation, says the actor.
“The voice, in English, was the first thing that was recorded in the process, and the design was done around that; we had one front camera and two side cameras and they gave me a little plastic sword to play with while I was making voices and a hat,” she explains.
“All this material was given to cartoonists, and they saw my handling, my expressions, how I sang songs, how I did things, and then they drew it. The truth is, it’s very bizarre, because all of a sudden you see it and you’re like, ‘This is mine,'” laughs the actor.
