It is not the first nor will it be the last. And yesterday it became known that after the success of M3GAN (it cost 12 million dollars, it grossed 98) there will be a sequel coming out in 2025, with a doll equipped with artificial intelligence as the protagonist, owner and lover of this horror produced by James Wan (The spell) and the production company Blumhouse, which specializes in horror films.

Of course, M3GAN, the character, has similarities to all the evil dolls that have come through the movies, including Annabella, obviously, Wan’s idea. And the screenplay was written by Akela Cooper, who worked with him on Malignant, based on a short story by the director of The game of fear.

Without further ado, M3GAN is a prototype AI robot, which owes its name to the English initials of Model 3 Generative Android, and which is not just any doll. Nor can it be considered a toy. No. M3GAN becomes the ally or, better, the protective guardian of Cody, an orphaned girl.

Cody (Violet McGraw) survived a car crash in the middle of a snowstorm that killed her parents, and was adopted by her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams, of Flee! Y Girls), who is not very good at raising children.

Ah, Gemma is the programming engineer, robotics graduate and creator of M3GAN, which is in probationary status, just until Gemma’s (Ronny Chieng) boss at Funki Toy sees what the doll is capable of and decides that there’s no need to wait any longer and go out and produce the toy that costs $10,000.

M3GAN is better than a pet. But in order to better develop his abilities, he needs to interact more with his owner, learn speech patterns, know the reason for his emotional behavior. This is how he learns of her afflictions and, in the face of any danger, will defend her. Whether it’s a neighbor dog, a pushy boyfriend, or anything else.

How the character was made

M3GAN, the “character”, is a combination of animatronics, CGI and motion capture of actress Amie Donald and the voice of Jenna Davis. It is really impressive what can be done in cinematography today – and let’s not say Hollywood, because the film is actually a co-production with New Zealand The film is not only of the horror genre, as there are many satirical notes, not only to multinationals who only seek economic profit at any price, the risks of new technologies and even the world of toys.

Let M3GAN sing for him titanium to Cady as if it were a lullaby is another humorous note.

He also owes a lot to him M3GAN to the Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a Terminator by James Cameron and clearly al RoboCop by Paul Verhoeven. But like any wayward boy, M3GAN will be as disobedient as possible and will know no bounds. Go to the cinema knowing it.
