Pop singer Kim Petras is the first transgender artist to win a Grammy; together with Sam Smith, this Sunday February 5, she won the award for best vocal performance, in this case in duo.

Kim Petras together with Smith (who in 2020 was defined as non-binary person) received a Grammy for the song wickedreleased as a single in 2022, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.

Petras, who spoke on behalf of the two, thanked the Grammy Award with a simple but heartfelt speech in which he remembered his friend Sophie, Madonna and her mother.

“I just want to thank everyone the incredible transgender legends that have come before, who has broken down the doors so that I can be here tonight. Sophie, especially my friend who passed away two years ago who she told me would happen and she always trusted me. Thanks for the inspiration.”

And then he referred to the queen of pop. “Madonna, for fighting for LGBTQ rights… I don’t think I could be here without Madonna. To my mother – I grew up near a hidden place in Germany – that he always believed in me, that I was a girl And I wouldn’t be here without her and her support.”

The final stretch was dedicated to Saint Smith: “Sam, thank you, you are an angel and a hero in my life and I love you, just like everyone who believed in me, I love you,” he concluded.

Kim Petras gained popularity from a television interview on German news channel Stern TV, where she spoke at the age of 14 about her gender transition, which she would complete at 16, becoming one of the young women to undergo a gender confirmation operation. In 2007 she began broadcasting her interpretations of her through home music videos.

And her music was enriched by her work as a model for a well-known German chain of hairdressers.

But it would be from 2011 when Petras, at the age of 19, started his musical career professionally. That year she released the EP A piece of tape and began actively participating in the music circuit in Germany.

Six years pass, until in August 2017 his first single is released, I don’t want it at allwith which he managed to climb the most listened to charts on Spotify and the video clip of the song achieved a strong impact on the Vevo platform.

In October 2017, Petras was chosen by Spotify as part of RISE Artist, a program designed to identify new music superstars. At the end of that year, the magazine Paper singles out Petras as “an artist most likely to dominate the pop charts”.

From then on, Petras’ career picked up speed; in January 2018, he launches noise; on February 14, for Valentine’s Day, it comes out Heart to break, presented on BBC Radio 1; a week later she released her EP Spotify Singles and in October, his EP Turn off the lightthemed around Halloween.

By the way, this EP shows a departure from Petras sound where she plays Elvira, the lady of the dark.

Kim Petras has released three albums, clarity AND Turn off the lightin 2019 and problematicin 2021 and fifteen singles, the last one wickedin a duet with Sam Smith, with whom she won the Grammy for Best Vocal Performance.

Born in Cologne, Germany on August 27, 1992, her mother is a choreographer and her father an architect. With the support of her parents, who saw her as a child (according to them, Kim she has perceived herself as a girl and not a boy since she was two years old).she began her gender transition at 12 years oldsince she started taking hormone blockers and had gender affirming surgery at the age of 16.

Petras’ music averages 3.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. And he will always be remembered in history.
