“Everything everywhere all at once” (“Everything everywhere at the same time”), the film with the most nominations ahead of the 2023 Oscars, this Sunday became the main winner of the 29th Annual SAG Awards, presented by the United States Actors Guild to television and motion picture production.

The American feature film produced by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan won not only the trophy for Best cast and acting awards for Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, but also earned a statuette for Jamie Lee Curtis, who won the shortlist for Best Supporting Actress against front-runner, Angela Bassett.

Bassett, star of the Marvel movie ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ has been a top contender in the category for weeks, if not months.

However, Curtis, nominated for her first SAG Award, was the surprise winner at the gala which was streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube page, from the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Visibly excited, the actress said she was wearing the wedding ring that her father Tony Curtis gave to her mother Janet Leigh.

“Look at me, I’m a ‘nepo baby,'” she said, referring to the term used for the children of celebrities who benefit from nepotism. “But the reality is that I’m 64 and that’s incredible,” added the artist who has participated in the Halloween saga and the film Mentiras Verdaderas with Arnold Schwarzenegger, among other works.

In the week leading up to SAG, “Everything” also became the winner of the Directors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards, two of the awards that tend to most accurately predict Academy Award winners. At SAG, Yeoh took the lead. “This is just not for me,” said the Malaysian-born actress. “It’s for every little girl who looks like me,” she added.

For his part, Quan, who was an actor as a child and had withdrawn from the profession for years due to lack of auditions, stressed that it is the first Asian to win in the supporting actor category in the SAGs.

“When I quit acting, it was because there were so few opportunities,” said the Vietnamese-born artist. “Now tonight we celebrate James Hong, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, Harry Shum Jr. The landscape looks very different now,” she noted.

The only film award of the night that didn’t go to the work of directors known as “The Daniels” was Best Actor, which went to the American Brendan Fraser for his contributions to the psychological drama ‘The Whale’.

British BAFTA winner ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, directed by Martin McDonagh, was the big disappointment of the day, not winning a single award out of the five for which it was nominated.

Press for small screen

During this event, the most extraordinary works of the small screen are also awarded, which this year went to the second season of “The White Lotus” (HBO Max) and “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)winners in the categories of Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, respectively.

Both productions started as favorites after winning the Golden Globes and “Abbott Elementary” (“Abbott College” in Spanish) was also a Critics Choice star.

In addition to Best Drama Series, HBO Max earned the accolade of Jennifer Coolidge for Best Actress – Drama; something that could only be matched by its main competitor in the platform market, Netflix, with the victory of Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) in the male version of this type.

For its part, “Abbott Elementary” did not win in the acting-comedy categories because the award for best performer went to Jean Samart (“Hacks”, HBO Max) and best actor to Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”, Hulu ).

the Hispanic Jenna Ortega was also not picked for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her critically acclaimed role in Netflix’s hit production ‘Wednesday’ (‘Merlina’).

Finally, Sam Elliot won Best Performer in a Miniseries for his role in ‘1883’ (Paramount+) and Jessica Chastain did the same for the miniseries ‘George & Tammy’.

The SAG Awards, from the Screen Actors Guild of America, are usually a good predictor of the Academy Awards, but this particular edition will be remembered as the first approach of one of the most important film awards in the USA to streaming platforms, as the gala was broadcast in full on the Netflix YouTube channel.
