The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 26th (local time) that the US government has concluded that the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) may have first leaked from a Chinese laboratory.

According to reports, the Department of Energy, which is in charge of energy and nuclear security in the United States, recently submitted a confidential intelligence report containing these contents to key figures in the White House and Congress. The Department of Energy was in the position that the origin of Corona 19 was unclear, but turned to support the hypothesis that it might have been leaked from a Chinese laboratory.

The U.S. Department of Energy did not provide an exact basis for making this judgment. However, it was evaluated that the claim would not be unfounded, as the Department of Energy has various national laboratories in the United States, including biology and nuclear fields, and is evaluated as having considerable authority in terms of scientific analysis.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also concluded that the origin of the Corona 19 virus is a laboratory in China. However, in addition to the FBI and the Department of Energy, the National Intelligence Service (NIC) and four other intelligence agencies support the theory of spontaneous generation of the virus, and two intelligence agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), have yet to come to a conclusion.

The media reported, “The claim that the virus leaked from a Chinese laboratory is different from the claim that the Chinese government created the virus to develop biological weapons.”

In response to this WSJ report, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in an interview with CNN, “The intelligence authorities have different views. Some concluded one way, some the other way,” he said. “At this time, there is no final answer from the intelligence authorities.”

“Many say they don’t have enough information to be sure,” he said. “All I can say is that the president has repeatedly instructed all of our intelligence agencies to commit their efforts and resources to finding the truth about this matter.”

“As we gain more insights and information, we will share them with Congress and the public,” he added.
