After the success of “Argentina, 1985″, Ricardo Darín is already working in the next project: will star in “The Eternaut”the adaptation it prepares Netflix from the popular comic by Héctor Germán Oesterheld, about a dystopian future in a Buenos Aires covered in radioactive snow.
“It’s a project huge and very complex, is an updated version that aims to go beyond the borders of our country. It’s based on the real comic, but there’s a new version and we’re all very excited and mobilized,” he confirmed in an interview with CNN Radio.
“It’s a very hard job, I’m preparing for it because it’s very demanding physically and mentally. It will be something that will not go unnoticed”he argued, and teased that they’re thinking about a season or two.
Darín also highlighted the work of director Bruno Stagnaro (Squatters, Un gallo para Esculapio), who has been working on the project for three years. “(He) is the head of a number of writers behind this new version. They have done an incredible job and something incredible awaits us,” he said.
“Cinema is a transfer of our culture and makes us known very well in the world, at a time when the news coming from Argentina is not entirely pleasant. We must defend our cinema, our culture and our arts” , remarked Darín.
A long awaited project
Although Netflix announced in early 2020 that it would add a series based on the cartoon released in 1957 to its catalog, the pandemic interrupted its plans shortly after.
One of the companies involved in the matter is K&S, the production company formed by Hugo Sigman and Oscar Kramer, for which Darín has already starred in several successful films, from Relatos salvajes, by Damián Szifron, to La cordillera (by Santiago Mitre). and The Odyssey.de los giles, by Sebastián Borensztein, also produced by Kenya.
When the project was announced, it emerged that the production would have to meet some requirements of the heirs of Oesterheld and the cartoonist Francisco Solano López, such as, for example, that the series was filmed in Buenos Aires -where the story takes place- and that Spanish was spoken.
Writer, screenwriter and militant of Montoneros, Héctor German Oesterheld disappeared in the city of La Plata on April 27, 1977, kidnapped by a task force of the last civil-military dictatorship, and is believed to have been shot dead in a Mercedes in 1978, although his body has never appeared.
The Eternaut focuses on an invasion of supernatural beings, who take over the world in a dystopian future -the action begins in 1959, and reaches 1963-. Oesterheld wrote it and Francisco Solano López drew it, and it was published in Hora Cero Semanal, from 1957 to 1959.
And it is Oesterheld himself who plays himself, as a comic book writer, who listens to the story of Juan Salvo (the character who, if he accepted, would play Ricardo Darín), a man who suddenly and out of nowhere materializes. , At home.
Only that he says that one day, while he was at home in Vicente López with his family (wife and daughter) and three friends with whom he was playing tricks, they heard strange news on the radio. There has been a nuclear explosion in the Pacific Ocean. Electricity is cut off. They look out and the road is completely covered in some kind of luminescent snow. The silence is total.
What else do you see? Dead bodies and cars that collided, and the neighbors across the street, who open a window to see what was going on, and watch them die. They sense that this snowfall is the reason for his death.
A friend of Salvo -Favalli, a physics teacher- thinks about making an insulating suit that protects from contact with the snow.
Thus was born El Eternauta, which will tell the battles with the “cascarudos” in the middle of General Paz Avenue (the first clash), and there will also be internal clashes in the River Plate stadium, where the Army of operations has its base.
