ABOUT “BROTHERHOOD”
The series takes place in São Paulo in the 1990s and not by chance. According to the series creator, Pedro Morellithe idea was to show the story from an unprecedented point of view in Brazilian dramaturgy, that of a woman.
For that, it would have to be in an era without smartphones. “Without a cell phone, the figure of the woman was more necessary for organized crime“, he explains. “It had to be in the 90s.“
The protagonists’ childhood, in the 1970s, is also shown in the series and the cast helped in the choice of location. “I showed a photo of the place to Seu Jorge and Naruna and they said it had to be a dirt floor“, he says. In the end, the location chosen was a community in Cubatão, in the interior of São Paulo, which lives on stilts.
The care taken by the direction and production was not only to appear believable, but also not to advance through places of speech. “I am fully aware that I am a white man and that is a privilege“, it says Pedro Morelli. “Since I’m in that privilege, I think I needed to talk about that unfair side. For that, I surrounded myself with people who had a place of speech that I don’t have.“
Besides naruna and Your Georgethe series has names such as Wesley Guimarães like their little brother, Lee Taylor like prisoner Ivan and Pedro Wagner as the other leader of the Brotherhood, Carrion.
The eight episodes of season 1 are available on Netflix.
