María José Cantilo, one of the pioneering women in the 1980s music scene, died at age 68. Composer and guitarist, he has recorded nine albums and collaborated with many of the major national rock artists.

Growing up in a large, musical family, María José began playing the guitar at an early age. They are ten siblings and the oldest of them was Miguel Cantilo. At the age of 19, he decided to go to El Bolsón to try his luck and began his career making a few small benefit shows.

In 1982, Miguel – recently returned from an exile that brought him to Spain – asked his sister to return to Buenos Aires, and María José began touring the budding underground music circuit born in the capital.

For 1984 will record his first solo albumwhere it had the participation of Leon Gieco, David Lebón, Fernando Lupano and Daniel Colombres among others.

Her second album, En Banda, was coming in the early 90s. It would be a busy decade for María José. In the same year he participated in a Playboy cover, and in 1992 He was arrested twice for drug possession.

Because of this he had to spend 2 years and 8 months in jail. This experience will be a book of its own.

At the end of 2011 he recorded and released “Esencia”, his latest album, which was mixed by his son Gaspar Benegas, musician and guitarist for Indio Solari.
