The film was released in theaters in Brazil in July of the same year. The director’s legacy includes feature films such as “Barravento” (1962), “Terra em Transe” (1967), “The Dragon of Evil Against the Holy Warrior” (1969), “O Leão de Sete Cabeças” (1970), among others.

It’s a complete cycle for our restoration, where the film will be re-screened for the first time in the same location where it premiered. May it be a new call of cultural resistance”, says the producer Lino Meirelesdirector of the award-winning feature film “Candango: Memories of the Festival”.

In a country with such a depreciated culture, with artistic production under attack, we made a counter-current effort. This is only possible because the film has its own strength.”, explains the director. Paloma Rocha.

The choice for the work was made not only because of its importance to the national culture, but because its last digitized version was made in 2002, with lower quality than the current one.

The new restoration was carried out at Cinecolor, a partner company of Cinemateca Brasileira, where the film copy was stored – five cans of 35mm negatives in perfect condition. Despite this, part of the Glauber was lost in the fire that hit one of the Cinemateca sheds, in São Paulo, in July 2021.

“Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol” mixes literary influences from Graciliano Ramos, Jose Lins do Rego and “Os Sertões”, by Euclides da Cunha.

The Cannes Film Festival takes place from the 17th to the 28th of May.
