In the new Doctor Strange movie, Avenger takes on the role of antagonist and takes on the multiverse to get what she wants.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” hits theaters on Thursday (3) with Wanda Maximoff against the entire multiverse – Reproduction / Marvel Studios

Life was never easy for Wanda Maximoff and since the character first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve been following her complicated journey. She lost her parents in childhood, then her twin brother, Pietro, was killed by Ultron and eventually Eyesightthe great love of his life, was also murdered.

In the midst of pain, Avenger created a perfect reality for herself, but when even that didn’t work out, she saw her world crumble before her eyes, along with her family, which would drive anyone crazy. It is at this point that we find her in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, which hits theaters this Thursday (5), an ambitious production that breaks with Marvel standards to bring an unprecedented horror story in the franchise, but full of feelings.

In the story – which ties directly into the events of “WandaVision”, the first series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Wanda is far more powerful than before, now that she’s become the Scarlet Witch, and wants to reclaim the life she once had. Westview at all costs.

despite the Doctor Strange insisting it was all a hoax, Avenger is convinced that if she ends up in another reality, she can get her whole life back. For that, she needs to find America Chavez, a young woman with the incredible power to travel between different realities. However, recognizing that Wanda is no longer the same, Doctor Strange will do everything to stop her from getting his hands on the girl.

Directed by Sam Raimiwho returns to the world of superheroes after directing the first trilogy of the Spider man, released between 2002 and 2007, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” follows the pattern of productions from Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: it doesn’t look like what we’ve seen before. Of course, the “Marvel essence”, which has won over so many fans over the years, is there, but the film still has several elements that make it unique, as well as “WandaVision”, “Loki” and “Moon Knight”, for example.

Although the film is a Doctor Strange story, the highlight is undoubtedly Wanda. Converted from ally to enemy, the character is responsible for the most exciting moments of “Multiverse of Madness”, from action to emotion, and Elizabeth Olsen is complete on paper, making us fear the Scarlet Witch, but still empathizing with Wanda and all her suffering.

The big problem with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, however, is the lack of direction it brings to the franchise. This is less the fault of the film than of Kevin Feigepresident of Marvel Studios, and the others responsible for continuing the franchise after “Avengers: Endgame”, a major event in the series so far.

The film ends this arc of Wanda’s story, but leaves no concrete clues about what to expect in the future. With “Multiverse of Madness”, eleven productions have already been released and, so far, there is no idea of Marvel’s plans for the future of the franchise and everything ends up in supposition. There is no major event in sight, as was the case with “The Avengers”, responsible for ending the first phase in 2012, and this leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, even after a great movie like this.

It is a fact that the Marvel Cinematic Universe no longer walks alone and has become a great story, with productions that fill in the spaces for, in the end, the puzzle to form. If Marvel decides to go back to treating its productions as it did in the first three phases, totally dismembering some of them from the main story to relocate them when they see fit, it may be that even the most loyal fans end up losing interest eventually.

However, this “problem” doesn’t detract from “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, which has the ability to make fans jump in the chair with excitement as much as “Spider-Man: No Return Home”, in addition to expanding the that we already know about the Marvel multiverse and introduce us to new – and, um, reintroduce not-so-new – characters, which you’re sure to hope to see more of on the big screen.
