It is no longer news that actresses have started to occupy larger spaces as protagonists in action films. And if before they were the ones the male hero had to save, now they are the ones, like Millie Bobby Brown in Bridesmaidthose who scratch, fight and kill.
Elodie, played by the actress Stranger things AND Enola Holmes, all streaming on Netflix, like this film, she doesn’t understand the rush of her father, Lord Bayford (Ray Winstone), a medieval patriarch who needs money, to marry her. There is the tip of the ball. Dad wants, with the money he receives as a dowry, to make everyone in his region live better than him. An exceptional boy.
Elodie is his eldest daughter, she accompanies, chats and even sleeps on the bed with her younger sister Floria (Brooke Carter). His mother is dead and he has a black stepmother (Angela Bassett), with whom it is clear at first that he doesn’t get along very well.
Elodie will become a princess as soon as she marries Prince Henry (Nick Robinson, Zach in Jurassic world), whose mother, Queen Isabella (Robin Wright) is the one who holds the reins of the kingdom in his hands. It is a marriage of convenience, and we will soon see the benefit that Queen Isabella will derive from it, to whom Wright knows how to give the same tone with which she governed in the last and painful season of House of cards.
The thing is Bridesmaid It’s the action film for these less rigid genre times. The protagonist likes riding more than staying in the palace, just before her wedding.
The fact is that this fairytale wedding is actually a trap (we don’t anticipate anything that isn’t seen in the trailer, which perhaps tells too much, and is more a summary of the film than a preview). After the wedding, Henry takes her with him to “honor the ancestors”, but in reality he must throw his wife’s living body into a cave for her to serve as food for a dragon, in order to satisfy a generations-old curse.
The film will largely take place there, in the cave, where a dragon wants to devour her. It won’t be the first time, because tradition dictates that, in order for the dragon not to attack the kingdom, three princesses must be given to him.
And since there was no Internet, all the bridesmaids arriving at the altar are unaware that the previous ones have mysteriously disappeared.
“Bridesmaid” Millie Bobby Brown
The title refers to “damsel”, a term of medieval origin to indicate a bridesmaid, a young unmarried woman, but it is clear that Elodie will not use that nickname, because she is brave like anyone else, she will get hurt, she will manage to also save his sister, all in the darkness of the cave.
It’s like an eternal duel between the dragon and Elodie, who learns that the reptile – which, appropriately, speaks in English – has also been deceived. Either way, you’ll have to fight for almost an hour with no help other than your wits to avoid being devoured by the fire.
Dan Mazeau, screenwriter of Fast and furious AND Clash of the Titans 2, doesn’t put much effort into character building. The Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo already has a project: a version with actors of The sword in the StoneDisney animated classic.
And Millie Bobby Brown also continues to work as a producer, as she is currently filming the fifth and final season of Stranger things. She’s come a long way, but apparently she’s got a lot more to look forward to.
