Film starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart to be screened at Cannes Film Festival
David Cronenberg said he is expecting audience abandonment during the premiere of his new film, “Crimes of the Future,” at this month’s Cannes Film Festival.
“There are some very strong scenes“, he said Cronenberg in an interview with Deadline. “I mean, I’m sure we’re going to have dropouts in the first five minutes of the movie. I’m sure of it. Some people who have seen the movie have said that they think the last 20 minutes will be very difficult for people and that there will be a lot of exits.“
“One guy said he almost had a panic attack. And I say, ‘Well, okay.’ But I’m not convinced that this will be a general reaction.“, said the director.
Cronenberg does not believe, however, that “Crimes of the Future” will provoke a reaction similar to the one his film “Crash” received at the festival, when it was booed over its depictions of graphic sexual acts.
“I expect dropouts in Cannes, and that’s a very special thing”, added Cronenberg. “People always leave, and the seats noticeably creak when you stand up, because the seats fold back and hit the back of the seat. So you hear clack, clack, clack.“, commented.
“If they’ll be outraged the way they were with ‘Crash’ in some way, I don’t think so. They may be repulsed to the point of wanting to leave, but that’s not the same as being outraged. However, I have no idea what will happen.”
Cronenberg continued: “I mean, there’s eroticism and sensuality, but of course part of what the movie says – and one of the characters says it very directly – is that surgery is the new sex. If you accept that, then yes, there is sex in the movie, because there is surgery! So people can get discouraged about it.”
The cast of “Crimes of the Future” includes Viggo Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”), Léa Seydoux (“007 – No Time to Die”), Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Scott Speedman (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Yorgos Karamihos and Nadia Litz.
“A deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humanity is learning to adapt to its synthetic environment. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, which alters their biological makeup.”says the official synopsis of the film.
