Since “Top Gun: Maverick” was announced, many fans of the feature with Tom Cruise were left wondering if other stars from the original would return for the sequel. we are talking about Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryanwhich gave life to Charlie and Carol Bradshaw, respectively. However, among the various announcements about the sequel, the names of the actresses were not mentioned, and the director Joseph Kosinski explained why.
Questioned by insider (via ScreenRant) about the absence of McGillis and Ryan, Kosinski revealed that both were not even thought of during the development of Part 2 of “Top Gun”. “These weren’t stories that we were releasing… I didn’t want all the stories to always be looking back. It was important to introduce some new characters.”pointed out the filmmaker.
In “Top Gun”, McGillis interpreted Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwoodthe aviation instructor and love interest of the character of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (cruise). Asked in 2019 about the possibility of playing the character again, she replied: “I’m old and fat, and I look age-appropriate”. Already Ryan lived the wife of the best friend of Pete, “Goose” Bradshawin her first major film role.
Meanwhile, in the new plot, instead of bringing again Kelly McGillis like the novel of the character of cruise, Jennifer Connelly (“The Express of Tomorrow”) was the new one chosen by the production. The actress will take on the role of Penny Benjaminwho was briefly mentioned in the first film as the “Admiral’s Daughter”, with whom Maverick had a previous case. penny is now a single mother and owner of a bar near the aviation school where the heartthrob teaches.
But, to cheer the fans and be part of the original cast, Val Kilmer returns for “Top Gun 2” reprising Ice Man.
