There are doctors who will heal our bodies, shrink to soothe our minds … and book sellers to take care of our souls. To celebrate these culture smugglers, these booksellers who inflict a thousand and one emotions on us, the Prix de la création team wants to get to know them. From coast to coast, we want to discover book sellers (and their bookstores) who are making a difference in their community.
This week, discover Léo, an avid literature enthusiast who opens a bookstore with friends An own book, a nod to Virginia Woolf. Located in the heart of rue Laurier Est, this space aims to bring people together, “a place of openness, discovery and discussion,” he said. The Prix de la création team asked him to tell us about his current favorites in terms of poetry collections.
” Now, more than ever, we need social binders. We need to see each other, exchange, hug each other. There is in these books an amazing potential to find oneself in the words of others. […] words that can comfort us. “
Three books of poetry to read, according to Leo:
Yesterday was violenceby Charlotte Francoeur, OMRI, September 21, 2020
Editor’s Summary: Yesterday was violence tells the story of a failed suicide attempt, a desired but unattainable death. It was a real declaration of love from a daughter to her mother, a great survivor of the St. Louis ice. Lawrence River.
” This is a book that really touched me. He approached the couple’s relationship with finesse. It’s wonderful, beautiful, touching and it’s also a graphic work because this publishing house works with visual artists. “
The black unicornby Audre Lorde, a translation by Gerty Dambury, L’Arche, October 10, 2021
Publisher Summary: The Collection black unicorn, written in 1978, occupies a special place in his poetic writings. The poet appears in all aspects of her femininity, as a child, mother, girlfriend, poet, activist. These love poems evoke the apogee of a desire, full of anger and sensuality that the intense awareness of the discrimination suffered cannot be suppressed.
” Audre Lorde is a successful African-American author. His poems are full of eroticism. It is majestic, very carnal, sensual, sexual. His pen is very political. “
ancestorby Goliarda Sapienza, Le Tripode, June 4, 2021
Publisher’s summary: The intensity of the melancholy destiny and the desire that dwells in Goliarda Sapienza sheds deeper light on all of her unique work. We see there, in a moving way, called by his lyrical voice, the decisive figures of his parents and the personal myth with which his life will unfold thereafter.
” As long as you fall in love with his work, you are part of his fan club. Everything he writes is so beautiful. Very feminist, she insisted on writing in a macho Italy where no editor wanted to sign her. To read! “
How do you imagine the first people to go to your bookstore?
” I imagine they are open to change, I imagine them what they are, when they come, as they leave. I want us to meet. “
The opening of the bookstore An own book (New window) will take place on May 28, 2022 at 1575 Laurier Avenue East.
