Canadian navy frigate hit by COVID-19 outbreak

A Royal Canadian Navy frigate was hit by the outbreak of COVID-19 as crews were preparing for an overseas deployment in the Pacific.

ang HMCS Winnipeg has returned to Esquimalt, British Columbia, after seven sailors tested positive for the virus, just weeks before the ship participated in a major training exercise and two overseas missions.

The ship should specifically assist in the application of United Nations sanctions against North Korea, which the Canadian Armed Forces has been doing since 2018.

Winnipeg will remain docked at Esquimalt until mid-June, during which sailors with symptoms are required to isolate themselves and not report to work.

The military said nearly 8,000 members of the force had tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with 268 active cases reported earlier this month.
