The Oscars are back to the pre-pandemic situation: films submitted to the Academy should have been released in theaters as well, and no longer just online.
After two years of residence following the pandemic and theater closures for health reasons, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Wednesday that Oscar nominees will have to relaunch their film in theaters, such as data.
However, eligible films will be allowed to launch simultaneously in theaters and on a streaming platform. On the other hand, the theater performance must last at least seven consecutive days, with at least one screening per day in one of the six major metropolitan areas approved in the United States – Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta and San Francisco.
The rules and changes for the 95th Academy Awards in 2023 were approved by the Academy’s Board of Governors at its most recent meeting.
Maximum 3 titles each movie for the best original song
The board also ruled that each film could submit no more than three tracks for the Best Original Song Oscar.
The Academy has also distributed updated guidelines for candidacy promotion campaigns, to maintain high levels of fairness and transparency and ensure that voting members make decisions based solely on the artistic and technical merits of worthy films and achievements.
These guidelines are specifically intended to manage promotions, special screenings, member interactions and invitations to hotels or restaurants.
So, after the announcement of the finalists, and until the closing of the votes, Screenings may not include any receptions, entertainment, free food and drink, or other awards, says the Academy. The guidelines also limit the number of emails members can receive per week about a particular movie.
Any violation of these guidelines may result in the disqualification of a film, as well as the suspension or expulsion of a member from the Academy.
The 95th Academy Awards are set to take place in Los Angeles on March 12, 2023.
