Film about the first trio of brothers to become NBA champions opens in June
Disney+ released this Friday (20) the trailer for “Rise”, the platform’s original film based on the true story of the family that created the first trio of brothers to become NBA champions: Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo, from the Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers’ Kostas Antetokounmpo and his younger brother Alex.
After emigrating from Nigeria to Greece, Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi and Yetide Badakirespectively) struggled to survive and support their five children, while living under the daily threat of deportation.
With their eldest son still in Nigeria living with relatives, the couple was desperate to obtain Greek citizenship but found themselves undermined by a system that blocked them at every attempt.
When they weren’t selling items to tourists on the streets with the rest of the family, the brothers – Giannis (Uche Agada) and Thanasis (Ral Agada) – played basketball with a youth team. Entering the sport late, they discovered their great skills on the basketball court and worked hard to become top athletes, alongside their brother Kostas (Jaden Osimuwa).
With the help of an agent, Giannis entered the NBA Draft in 2013 on an unlikely prospect that would change not just his life, but the lives of his entire family. And last season, Giannis and Thanasis helped bring the Milwaukee Bucks their first championship ring in 50 years, while Kostas played for the previous season’s champions, the Los Angeles Lakers.
The film is directed by Akin Omotoso (“Vaya”), screenplay by Arash Amel (“A Private War”) and production of Bernie Goldmann (“300”). The production will launch on June 24 exclusively on Disney+.
