Known as one of the biggest rivals of the God of thunder in the comics, Gorr was created by Jason Aaron and first appeared in “Thor: God of Thunder #2”, published in November 2021. The villain was the main antagonist of Avenger in two arcs, “The Butcher of the Gods” and “The Divine Bomb”, but in all , appeared in fourteen issues.

Gorr’s origin begins as an alien from an inhospitable planet, so he grew up surrounded by misery, death and hunger. He always asked the gods to intercede for his people, but they never did. After losing all his loved ones to the tragedies so common on his planet, he abandons all his beliefs for good.

Gorr only assumes the title of Butcher of the Gods when he witnesses a battle – which he considers futile – of Knull, precisely the god of symbiotes. It is at this moment that he realizes that the gods do not care about mortal lives, so he makes it his great purpose to destroy all deities in the universe. When the fight ends with Knull’s enemy crashing on his planet, pierced by the necroswordan ancient weapon, the god asks for Gorr’s help, but he performs his first kill to take care of the powerful object.

  • Powers

In the comics, the villain doesn’t have any special powers and all his abilities were acquired by the power that the Necrosword granted him. With it, he was given great stamina, superhuman strength, the ability to regenerate his wounds, and is considered virtually immortal. Making use of the artifact, he can also use the living abyss to forge his own weapons, shields and even wings.

  • Connecting to MCU Events

In the comics, he pursues Thor through three distinct timelines: in the past, when the son of Odin is still immature and irresponsible; the present of the Marvel Universe; and in the future, where the hero has become a lonely King. He relentlessly hunts the Avenger to not only kill him, but also to gain information about the other gods to continue his slaughter.

Gorr was eventually murdered by Thor when he tried to destroy Olympus by implanting the God Bomb there. Avenger absorbed the bomb’s powers and also the Necrosword, directing the objects’ energy against the villain. But the aftermath of that confrontation plagued the God of Asgard for a long time.

In “Original Sin”, Nick Fury appears imbued with the power of lookout (which appears as a statue of the court of the gods) and tells Thor that “Gorr was right”. The hero came to feel unworthy of holding Mjönir. In this same period Jane Foster assumed the mantle of Mighty Thor while Thor travels across the universe to find a new weapon.

In the new trailer, the Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) comments to the Son of Odin that Gorr is the first major villain she has faced since gaining her powers and becoming worthy of wielding Mjönir.

We already know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t usually follow the events of the comics to the letter, but we can prepare ourselves for what’s to come.

“Thor: Love and Thunder” opens in Brazilian cinemas on July 7.
