Cannes Film Festival: “Elvis” was watched, with Tom Hanks

The Cannes Film Festival laid the best red carpet on Wednesday to greet ElvisBaz Luhrmann’s film about the king of stone, incl Tom Hanks as her manager, while Frenchman Claire Denis presented Noon starsset in Nicaragua, in competition for the Palme d’Or.

The parade lived up to expectations, with young American actor Austin Butler playing Elvis, accompanied by Oscar winner Tom Hanks, playing his manager, “Colonel” Parker, and the King’s own widow, Priscilla Presley.

Ricky Martin, Shakira, Kylie Minogue and soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo’s partner Georgina Rodríguez, were some of the stars who attended the premiere.

Shortly before, the Ukrainian film team ButterflyVision (out of competition) unfurled a banner on the red carpet that read, in English: “Russians kill Ukrainians, does talking about genocide hurt your sensibilities?”. They also sounded a warning siren.

Elvis covers, for two decades, the beginnings, the glory and the decline of the king of stone, who died in 1977 at age 42. The Californian, who had a strong physical resemblance to Elvis in the late ’50s, Butler, 30, is a classic Disney team product.

He has participated in a dozen films, including Once upon a time … in Hollywoodby Quentin Tarantino, o The dead do not dieby Jim Jarmusch. Actor Denzel Washington recommended Australian Luhrmann to give Butler a chance for this role, according to the American site. Weekly Entertainment.

“I received a video of this young man, interpreting bathing in tears Unchained Melody (a song covered by Presley) and I was like, what is this? “Luhrmann explained.” And then I got a message from Denzel Washington, who I didn’t know. Butler spent a year rehearsing to mimic the interpreter’s velvet voice Heart Break Hotel.

Elvis inspire hope because Luhrmann is a director who is not accustomed to being intimidated by the giants of history, even Shakespeare, whom he dares to cover Romeo and Julieteither The Great Gatsbyone of the pinnacles of American literature.

The film, which runs for two hours and 39 minutes, was “an intense experience,” said Elvis ’grandson Riley Keough in Cannes.

More films in competition

Meanwhile, the race for the Palme d’Or is in its last meters.

Noon stars It is based on a 1986 novel by Denis Johnson. The film tells a scary love story between an American journalist (played by young Margaret Qualley) and a mysterious British businessman (Joe Alwyn).

“As in the book, I wanted to describe a fortuitous encounter that turns into love, a sexual attraction that devours and blinds. Then, as in the book, the violence that shook the country is seen from afar,” the filmmaker explained.

Claire Denis is one of five women aspiring this year for the Palme d’Or, which will be awarded on Saturday by a jury headed by Vincent Lindon. At the last Berlinale, the French filmmaker won an award for best direction along With love and affection.

Another film in the competition staged this Wednesday is Leila’s Siblings, Iranian feature film by Saeed Roustayi, a family drama. Roustayi, 32, admired Cannes with the law of Tehran last year.
