Comedian, author and director Mathieu Quesnel recently launched a rallying cry for the creation of a new venue in Montreal that will welcome a bolder theater, while lowering entry barriers for neophytes. Temporarily called The Pirate or the Pirate Theater, the project is already progressing very fast, with a desired opening for 2023.
When the young actors and actresses delayed the premiere of the play Dear Chekhov by Michel Tremblay on May 5, at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM), Mathieu Quesnel was present. Listening to the requests of the group spokesperson, regretting that TNM is in the process of die separated from people and their originalityhe admitted he was torn.
I understood what they meant, but there was a part of me that “if your show is a bit left-wing, a bit crazy, you don’t want to do it in front of that audience. [de toute façon]”he explains.
Of course TNM makes shows for its public […] After that, if you want to make a show a bit different, find yourself a different room. And that’s exactly what Mathieu Quesnel wants to do, admitting to himself that he has suffered some rejection by showcasing ideas relatively unfamiliar in more traditional cinemas.
The environment shows that we need a new room where everyone can put their interaction into programming.he added, determining that he wanted to have a rotation at the level of artistic direction.
For more free and popular theater
Mathieu Quesnel, a regular in cabarets, evenings of short plays or readings, said that for several years he felt an obsession for slightly more productions on the left, especially when he was theatrical artistic director of Zoofest component to ‘OFF from Just For Laughs Festival. He also says he wants to democratize theater for neophytes.
” There is a tendency to be elitist in the theater, or too intellectual: you feel like you are not part of the gang when you enter the venue. Here, we want to go the opposite of that. “
[J’aimerais créer] a large popular, accessible and high-quality theater, where you will find shows both underground and more famous, in a festive atmosphere. That’s why I gave the example of Le Bordel in humor or Le Quai des Mists in musiche explains.
The man of the theater has proven that he has received some support in the theatrical environment since he, somewhat on a whim, announced his intention a few weeks ago on Facebook. He has already started shopping for a building that can fulfill his dream.
In the world of theater, it wakes people up. If I hadn’t felt this enthusiasm, I wouldn’t have started. But here I have decided to take the reins of this project, and I will look at it until completion, perhaps in a relatively short time. The goal is to open in 2023.
