Duffer Brothers Talked About Choosing The Track For The Series Soundtrack
The scene in which the song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)”, hit by Kate Bushhelp Max to escape the clutches of vecna in the fourth season of “Stranger Things” is already considered one of the most beautiful of the Netflix series and it seems that the hit will return to the soundtrack in the final episodes.
In a new article on the Netflix website, Matt and Ross dufferthe creators of the series, revealed that the initial idea would not use the 1985 track to break the monster’s curse. “We were researching people who have a coma and stuff, and I think that’s what led us to the song. Music has the power to reach people even when they are in these catatonic states. But then we thought, ‘Well, whatever the song, it has to be perfect.explained Ross.
according to showrunnerthe ideal track would need to be cinematic to match the tense moment of Max’s confrontation with Vecna. “We knew that the scene, where she’s going through what we call the mental layer, needed to have a cinematic scope. At the same time, I needed to be emotional. And Kate Bush’s lyrics are emotional.”
The search for the “perfect song” had the partnership Nora Felder, supervisor of the musical part of the series and as soon as they found “Running Up That Hill” they already contacted the artist. “She’s been amazing. We sent the footage so she could see how the music is used in the series”, revealed Matt. “There is an epic Kate Bush moment at the end [episódio 9] that we didn’t expect, we kind of found out while we were editing.”
“The sequel was really cool, but there was one thing missing. And I was like, ‘Well, let’s try Kate. When did Kate let us down?’ We sent the scene to her and she was kind enough to let us use her music one more time. He comes back in an important way.”he added.
Because of the success of the fourth season premiere of “Stranger Things,” Kate Bush’s “Running up that Hill (A Deal With God)” hit the top of iTunes 37 years after its release.
