French star Catherine Deneuve will receive an honorary Golden Lion at the 79th Venice Film Festival, held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 10, Mostra, the world’s oldest film festival, announced Wednesday.
It is a joy to receive this prestigious award at the Venice Film Festival, which I have long loved and known, since good day Luis Buñuel received the Golden Lionresponse of the 78-year-old actress, quoted in the festival’s press release.
Another Golden Lion for good day in 1967
Mostra’s director, Alberto Barbera, proposed to give Catherine Deneuve this award on the Biennale board of directors, which manages Mostra.
Quoted in the press release of the festival, Alberto Barbera saluted an eternal diva, a true silver screen icon […] among the greatest performers in cinema history.
He also remembers the Golden Lion winning good dayin 1967, as well as her Volpi cup for best actress won for Place the Vendôme by Nicole Garcia, in 1998, still in the Lido.
Mr. Barbera also emphasized artistic teamwork [de la comédienne] including some of the most important actors and directors in Europe: Roger Vadim, Jacques Demy, Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut, Roman Polanski, Marco Ferreri, Marcello Mastroianni and Gérard Depardieu.
A multi-award winning actress
In her long career, Catherine Deneuve has received numerous awards, including two Cesar for Best Actress for The Last Metroin 1981, and for IndochinaOscar also for best foreign film, in 1993.
He was also awarded the Palme d’honneur at Cannes in 2005, as well as the Silver Bear for best artistic contribution in Berlin in 2002 for eight women by Francois Ozon.
