Top Gun: Maverick: Paramount sued for copyright infringement

The heirs and heirs of the author of an article that inspired the film Top gun (1986) filed a lawsuit Monday against Hollywood giant Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement, according to court documents.

Thirty -six years after Tom Cruise’s hit airplane movie, inspired by an article by Ehud Yonay titled Top Guns published in 1983, Paramount released the sequel at the end of May, Top Gun: Maverick.

Presented in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where Tom Cruise received the Palme d’honneur, the Paramount/Skydance film began the moment it was released. It just reached the top ten recipe list for the second weekend in the United States and Canada.

In their lawsuit filed in California court, Shosh and Yuval Yonay, according to the author’s widow and son living in Israel, said they revoked the copyright to the story in 2020 and accused Paramount of having deliberately ignored it.

The Yonays argue and Paramount denies that the 2022 sequel, like the 1986 film, is inspired by the author’s story, according to the complaint. The Yonays sought an order to prevent Paramount from distributing the film’s sequel as well as damages of unspecified amount.

These charges are no basis at we will defend ourselves with all our might, Paramount said in a statement Monday quoted in several media outlets. The sequel to Top Gun received critical acclaim.

Tom Cruise still plays Navy test pilot Pete. maverick Mitchell, now a captain, is training to bomb the uranium enrichment plant of a country considered hostile.

The film, whose release was delayed two years by the COVID-19 pandemic, has a solid cast, including Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller and Jon Hamm, while the veteran of Top gunVal Kilmer, made a brief appearance in the role of Iceman, a main character in the first stage.
