New albums by Arcade Fire, Hubert Lenoir and Les Louanges are among those running for this year’s Polaris Music Prize.
The shortlist for the Best Canadian Album award has narrowed to 40 albums, out of a total of 223 applicants. They will be vying for a spot on the shortlist, which will be announced on July 14.
Other selected artists include Montrealers Jean-Michel Blais, Lydia Képinski and Pierre Kwenders. The game also includes new Brunswickers Julie Doiron and Cedric Noel, as well as P’tit Belliveau, from Nova Scotia.
Tanya Tagaq, Haviah Mighty and Backxwash, Polaris winners in recent years, are also on the list of their latest albums.
The Polaris Music Prize gives $ 50,000 to the artist or group that created last year’s best Canadian album, regardless of genre or sale.
Last year, the award went to hip-hop artist Cadence Weapon, for Parallel Worlda poetic reflection inspired by the anti-racism protests that shook the United States after the death of George Floyd in 2020.
The name of the Polaris winner will be announced on Sept. 19 at a gala at Carlu in Toronto, and broadcast on CBC Music. The other artists on the shortlist will receive $ 3,000 each.
