It is difficult to think that Paul McCartney will find a better way to celebrate his 80th birthday that I sing Glory days on stage with Bruce Springsteen accompanied by 60,000 guests.

That’s right, the nice hitter turns 80 today, Saturday. It is one of those cultural points of reference that make one sigh and say “Has it been that long?” as well as appreciating what it still has to offer.

It is gone more than half a century since the Beatles disbanded and time has made a reality that joke of the young people of the 70s who said: Was Paul McCartney in a band before Wings?

Like other members of the generation who have said “I hope I die before I get old” Included Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and the Beatle Ringo Starr, McCartney continues to work and share his music from the stage. Another icon of the 60s, brian wilson by the Beach Boys, will play Monday at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City for his 80th birthday.

“He has a youthful exuberance that has no age”, Bob Spitz, the Beatles biographer, said about McCartney. “There’s still something about that 21-year-old boy that shines through in all of his performances.”

the Thursday show

It would be cliché, and wrong, to suggest that time has passed without a trace. The frailty of his voice was evident when he sang black bird Thursday in MetLife Stadium, the last night of a short tour in the United States. He had a hard time hitting the high notes here todayher love letter to John Lennon, whose life was killed too soon.

But with the skill of an empathic band and the imagination and voices of the audience, the hard points are overcome.

“Yes, yes, right, I have a birthday coming up”McCartney said, reading the signs from the audience to remind him. “I’m not trying to ignore it, but …”

The audience sang spontaneously “Happy birthday”even before a famous New Jersey resident, Jon Bon Joviwill carry balloons during the second round of the concert to sing the song once more.

Another boy from New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen, joined McCartney to sing a duet Glory days and a version of I want to be your man. Afterwards he reappeared for a duel of guitars in ‘Abbey road’‘.

For most artists, the presence of local royalty could be a difficult time to get through. few can sing let it be Y hey guide immediately after.

To celebrate the musician’s birthday, the magazine Stereogum asked 80 artists to choose their favorite McCartney song, and those choices have been quite varied, from the 1958 pre-Beatles song Despite all the danger (with whom McCartney performed at MetLife) until his 2016 collaboration with Rihanna Y Kanye West Four five seconds.

David Crosby and Dan Auerbach del Black keys have chosen Eleonora Rigby. The great Wayne Coyne from The flaming lips elected Magical Mysteries Tour. Steve Earle selected Nightlywhile Joe Elliott’s Def Leppard went against the grain with dessert Little lamb dragonfly. Mac DeMarco asked for the epic of RAM, The back seat of my car.

Many complained about the injustice of having to choose just one.

the article of Stereogum illustrates the different perspectives of musicians of different generations in a living catalog. For example, he revealed that a largely ignored album likes it McCartney II, of 1980, had a far greater impact on emerging artists than would have been expected from its reception at the time.

In fact, yesterday, Friday, McCartney’s team announced they would include McCartney II with McCartney since 1970 and McCartney IIIfrom 2020, in a package that will go on sale in August.

How vast is the catalog? McCartney performed 38 songs to MetLife, 20 of them from the Beatles, and has even allowed itself the luxury of omitting an entire decade. Do you remember the 90s?

With the help of Peter Jackson, who reinvented the sessions of take up again for a television project last year, McCartney was able to do a “virtual” duet with Lennon singing his part of I got a feelingtaken from his famous rooftop concert.

He also paid tribute to George Harrisondied in 2001, with a version of somethingwhich began with Paul playing a ukulele which George gave him before being joined by the rest of the band.

Spitz reminded clip from the Beatles era where Lennon told an interviewer that he would be surprised if they lasted more than 10 years. McCartney was standing beside him laughing. Lennon was right about the Beatles as a unit, but he was wrong about their music.

After the last fireworks exploded, as he happily left the stage, McCartney signed with: “See you next time”.
