It was in the hands of the famous singer from Cordoba, who prophesied that this song would be his last hit and added the title of INRIthe initials that would be written on the cross on which Jesus Christ lay.

The song had record sales in Argentina with the interpretation of “El Potro ”, as well as being replicated in many countries of Latin America and Europe, in different languages and sung several times by Maradona himself.

It was recently the theme chosen to accompany the trailer for Sueño Bendito, the biopic produced by Amazon about the life of the idol.

“Master, may I ask you? Can you sing me mine? It was Maradona’s request to Alejandro Romero for his daughter Dalma’s first birthday after Rodrigo’s death in April 2001.

Invited by Claudia, Romero met who was his inspiration. “I grabbed the viola and had to close my eyes to sing Diego was watching me! It was a high altitude situation and I am very dizzy. When I open my eyes in the middle of the song, I see that Diego is lying on the floor enjoying himself with a smile on his face. It was a very emotional moment. Incredible “, recalls the composer. The champion has always defined the lyrics as one of the most beautiful songs written for him.

The story behind the success

It was the beginning of 2000 and the economic and political situation of that time seemed to erode the dreams and musical goals of the young Alejandro Romero. On February 29 of that year his phone rang: Rodrigo “el Potro”, his brother-in-law, invited him to write a song for his next album and, without further details, he left in the hands of the author what might come of it.

Romero thought for a long time in front of blank pages. Until, after much frustration and despair, he rolled his eyes and repeated over and over … “Give me a hand”. So, he grabbed the guitar and started writing single words, the first thing that came to mind.

It was then that the magic happened that guided him to complete the letter that resonated within him: “So I began to write nonsense words for myself: ‘In a village he was born, it was God’s desire, to grow and survive to humble expression, to face adversity with the desire to earn a living at every step … ‘and in that moment I heard my inner voice telling me’ in a paddock he forged an immortal left foot ‘and that’s when I understood it had something to do with Maradona, ”he recalls

Grateful and excited, he called Rodrigo once the song was complete, which he voiced “Diego will love it, everyone will sing it (…) This is your passport to not ask anyone for anything!”. Then, with a serious expression and staring at the page with the text, she declared that this would be his latest success and he christened the song with the acronym INRI in the margin of the page in homage to Diego.
