The old advice of the graphic designer from the 1970s (which many still continue to put into practice in pursuit of impact), that of “Don’t let reality ruin a good grade”, it must resonate ominously in those who shape biographical or fictional films based on real events. If you’ve heard it, the phrase shouldn’t have intimidated the creators of María Marta: the crime of the country.

Inspired by the Archimedean case of the murder of María Marta García Belsunce, the HBO and HBO Max series finds its best launch pad in realityto make a fiction – which is, after all, its essence – a clearly plausible story.

He is rigorous in history, he has respect for the case, for its protagonists, for the memory of the person murdered on October 27, 2002 and, fundamentally, for the spectator (at this point in the streaming, already globally referred to as viewer). Because, despite being a well-known story to most Argentines, the plot takes.

Or maybe for this very reason. As happened with the Monzón series, which aired on Space three years ago and quickly became a cable hit. We already knew everything, but we wanted to see this kind of reconstruction of events. What was the famous balcony of Mar del Plata like? Who would play Alain Delon?

In Maria Marta … the focus of the scene has shifted from the balcony to the bathroom. That space in the house of García Belsunce, where she was found lifeless, the presentation office of this Warner and Polka production for HBO, structured in eight episodes lasting about 40 minutes. The streaming had already picked up the glove on this case with the documentary Carmelo: who killed Maria Marta?by Alejandro Hartmann, which premiered on Netflix two years ago.

While the two episodes sail in the same thematic waters e neither of them tip the scales on the suspects, the path is different. Almost 20 years after the crime that took place in the Carmel village, Pilar, it is not yet known who killed her.

reality and fiction

Indeed, this Thursday Nicolás Pachelo declared the number 4 of San Isidro before the Oral Criminal Court. Interpreted by Nicola Francesca (his character is one of the few who has changed his identity and in fiction his name is Matías Centeno), the former neighbor of García Belsunce y Carrascosa is one of the main defendants.

But the HBO series he arranges all the cards on the sheet, opens the game and holds no cards. There is a deep investigative work on the case and, above all, on what your coverage was journalistic. And there is an interesting arrangement of the characters, with all their shadows in tow.

With a uniform level of good performance – the same, almost all suffer from some trait of exaggeration in the physical or conceptual-, the notable works of Mike Amigorena and Muriel Santa Ana.

He, like the prosecutor Marcos del Río (who in real life is Diego Molina Pico), and she as an investigator and blogger, stubborn with the innocence of Carlos Carrascosa, who until recently had been targeted as a suspect. As the series explains when the curtain falls, now he “He is free and was acquitted in 2020. He was accepted as a plaintiff in the case.”

The interpretation of Muriel Santa Ana, who composes a character about which there was not much information publicly, it is flawless and deserves the top of the podium.

By way of Heart teamthe cast features prominent figures, such as Laura Nova (Maria Marta), Jorge Marral (holm oak), Carlos Belloso (Horacio Garcia Belsunce), Guglielmo Arengo (Guillermo Bartoli), Ana Celentano (Irene Hurtig) e Valeria Lois (Juana, Belén’s partner in the task of defending the widower’s innocence). And the names follow.
