As well as shirts, jackets and caps, new equipment from the supporters’ panoply will be unveiled in England. The Manchester City football club presented a connected scarf, much more elaborate than the classic models already worn in stadiums.
With its integrated sensors, the objective is to collect data during a match to learn more about the sensations of the fans present in the stadium. The object was developed by Cisco, which sponsors the Mancunian club, as well as the Unit9 agency.
Measures of physiological responses
The connected scarf should be available for the next season, specifies Reuters. On its website, the club announces that, so far, only six veteran Manchester City fans have been invited to a pilot program to test the fabric.
Heart rate, temperature or skin conductance (electrical activity on the surface of the skin) are some of the data recorded by an EmotiBit sensory sensor. These measurements of physiological responses to emotion and arousal are then compared to what happens in the field.
During the pilot experiment, more than 120 moments of interest could be detected during a 90-minute match. Which allowed the club “to see how true passion manifests itself through moments of joy, nervousness, tension,” he writes.
However, the use of the connected scarf remains unclear. Will it run on a battery? Will I have to recharge it before going to the stadium? Will followers be able to access the data? No information provided. But the club has already warned: the object will be available in limited quantities.
