two months later the verdict in your favor in his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp and his friend, rock legend Jeff Beck, become involved in a plagiarism case.
as reported Rolling Stonethe two artists, who released a joint album last July, are accused of having taken, without authorization, a poem by Bruce Jackson in their song Sad parade of motherfuckers.
“Tramp Ben”
Published in 1974 in the collection Put your ass in the water and swim like me, this text entitled “Hobo Ben” recounts the travels of a drifter, Slim Wilson, who travels through the United States. Here he invites himself to a party and addresses the organizers:
“Ladies of culture and beauty so refined, is there any among you who would give me wine? / I am ragged, I know, but I have no stench / and God bless the lady who will buy me a drink / Hattie turned to Nadine with a laugh and said, ‘What that funky son of a bitch really needs, is a bath. It’s a bath),’ we can read in this poem.
Within Sad parade of motherfuckers, Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck cover several of these lines including “I’m scruffy, I know, but I don’t stink”, “God bless the lady who buys me a drink” and “What this motherfucker really needs is a bathroom”. But Bruce Jackson claims not to appear in the title credits.
“The only two lyrics written by Depp and Beck that I could find on the entire track are ‘Big time motherfucker’ and ‘Bust it down to my level’. Everything else is from my poem. I’ve been posting stuff for 50 years, and this is the first time that someone has appropriated my texts by putting their own name on them,” Bruce Jackson told Rolling Stone.
At the moment, Bruce Jackson told the American music media that he has no intention of suing Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck, but that he is studying, together with his son, Michael Lee Jackson, other possible legal remedies.
