It’s time for changes at Warner Bros. During a second-quarter earnings conference call for the studio – newly merged with the Discovery group – on Thursday, new Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav has revealed the major developments ahead at the DC superhero franchise.
The CEO intends to launch a new strategy that aims to concentrate the studio’s next activities in theaters, without going through streaming. A decision that explains in particular the choice of Warner Bros. to cancel the release of the film Bat girlscheduled to stream directly on HBO Max.
David Zaslav has also announced that HBO Max will merge with Discovery+ to form a single platform, scheduled for 2023 in the United States and 2024 in Europe.
“A reboot” of the franchise
As Marvel has been able to do by developing its brand and successful movies, David Zaslav wants to expand the DC universe in the coming years: “We’re going to do […] A franchise reboot. Let’s structure this business. There will be a team to implement a 10-year plan focused solely on DC, “she confided during her presentation, broadcast by the hollywood reporter.
“It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horne and Bob Iger very effectively developed at Disney with the appointment of Kevin Feige. We believe we could build a long-term and much more sustainable successful franchise from our DC licenses,” he said. .
And to add: “As part of this, we are going to focus on quality. We’re not going to release a movie until it’s ready… The goal will be to make each of these movies, overall, the best it can be. DC is something we can improve on, and now we’re going to focus on that.”
Given this “reset” planned by the studio, the next Warner Bros movies – black adam, The flash… – will then suffer the same fate as Bat girl? This doesn’t seem to be on the agenda for David Zaslav, who always claims to rely on these releases to develop the franchise:
“We have some great DC movies coming up. black adam, Shazam 2 Y The flash. We are working on all this. We have seen them, and we think they are great, and that we can make them even better, ”she said, assuring that these projects will not be abandoned.
