American videographer Ray Mona unearthed the archives of the Library of Congress, in the United States, a treasure for fans of Japanese animation and sailor moon: the extremely rare pilot of the American remake of the Japanese classic, produced in 1993, and considered lost for years.
This amazing pilot, of about ten minutes, mixes animated images and real shots. It is produced by Toon Makers and Renaissance Atlantic, a company that had already adapted another classic of Japanese culture for the small screen and the American market: super sentairenowned for the occasion Forest ranger.
Considered unconvincing at the time, the pilot had not encouraged the producers to embark on creating a full series. Lost for years, the pilot had become a cult. To see it you had to go to the specialized site Catsuka, which had a pirated version, recorded with a video camera during a convention.
an exciting story
For several months, cameraman Ray Mona investigated the pilot. In contact with several members of the production, he was able to obtain a VHS version of the pilot. In a documentary available on his YouTube channel, he tells the fascinating story of this aborted series.
Ray Mona thus reveals in his documentary that the series would have been very different from the license imagined by the mangaka Naoko Takeuchi. New characters would have been created, as well as new weapons. And the rest of the series would have continued to mix live action and 2D animation.
