The Inhuman, a genre film about an Anishinaabe legend
Anishinaabe director Jason Brennan presents his new film, The Inhuman , based on the legend of Wendigo, a fearsome and insatiable creature that feeds on the vices of its victims. A legend that is at the heart of Anishinaabe culture, and has been shown in cinemas – with mixed success.
Wendigo is very polarized in indigenous cultures. Communities and Seniors [ne veulent pas] talk about it, because it will bring back the creature , said Mr. Brennan. But I want to say how this creature will have a place today he continued.

The movie The Inhuman was shot largely in the territory, near the Kitigan Zibi community, where Mr. Brennan spent his summers and followed part of his education . And he insists on the grief that many members of the First Nation live in, between leaving the territory and their community, or staying. The same question haunted Mr. Brennan.
However, leaving the community creates a void that must be filled.

A legend rooted in modernity
The movie The Inhuman follows Mathieu, an aboriginal neurosurgeon who lives in a large city. Due to drug addiction and an adulterous relationship, the character refused to return to his community following the trauma of youth.
Also consumed by the memories and visions of a horrible creature, Wendigo, Mathieu’s character must return to his community to dispose of the ashes of his deceased father. So, alone in the forest, he has to confront Wendigo, his inner demon, and try to fix his decaying life thanks to his ancestral culture.

” He’s into consumption, he’s not quite in his head, it’s interesting as an actor to go into areas like that, all the human weaknesses and flaws that one can have. “

A genre film shot in the territory

Mr. Brennan began his film career as a producer, as there were no Aboriginal film producers at the time. He also believes that the film The Inhuman won’t happen if I’m not a producer .

The Inhuman is a working genre film. The rendering of Wendigo is not caricatural. And the sound coating is intended to be anxiety-provoking. It was an atmosphere we wanted to create, of anxiety, even though there were a lot of panoramic shots, and above all the feeling that Mathieu had a constant touch on his shoulders, which always bothered him.
