Slight increase in the number of deaths from COVID-19 in Manitoba

Manitoba’s weekly public health report covering the week of April 10-16 reports 1,190 new cases of COVID-19, a decrease of 504 from the previous week.

In contrast, 12 Manitobans died from the virus last week, the same as the week before the restrictions were lifted. It also had 7 more deaths than last week and 206 people were admitted to hospital, 29 more.

According to the weekly report, Wastewater monitoring data in the City of Winnipeg as of April 7 indicated continued COVID-19 activity, with an overall downward trend in activity.

The decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases recorded from April 10 to 16 may be partly explained by the decrease in the number of tests performed. In fact, there were approximately 951 trials per day that week against 1166 the previous day.

Furthermore, the number of real cases is underestimated, due to access to trials polymerase chain reaction testing is limited to the province. However, this is the only one officially counted in the provincial report.

For its part, the positivity rate dropped slightly to 19% against 20.7% in the previous report.

A new outbreak has occurred at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.
