Increase in hospitalizations and deaths at COVID-19 in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan health authorities recorded 24 COVID-19-related deaths in the week of March 27 to April 2 in addition to seeing an increase in hospitals.

These data were made public on Thursday by the provincial government.

Of the 24 new deaths, one patient was between 20 and 39 years old. Eight people also died at the age of 80.

In comparison, the government reported 20 deaths last week.

The number of hospitalizations is also rising in Saskatchewan. As of April 6, 354 patients were in the hospital. This is an increase of 30 patients compared to last week. 20 people are in intensive care.

The province had 1,032 cases of COVID-19 identified by PCR test in the week of March 27 to April 2. Of the new cases, there were 304 in Saskatoon, 178 in Regina and 128 in the Central East part of the province.

Just over 20% of the new cases identified by the PCR test came from the Omicron BA.2 subvariant and about 80% were from the Omicron variant.

The province confirmed 20 outbreaks in long -term care centers or homes across the province according to the weekly tally.

The government also states that 85.7% of Saskatchewanians over the age of five received a single dose and 80.7% got their second dose.

As for the booster dose, 51.4% of Saskatchewanians aged 18 and older got it.
