SIU Removes Two Ottawa Police Officers Over Death of Man in Custody

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has released the results of its investigation into Ottawa Police Service (OPS) officers into the death of a man in the cell in January 2021.

On January 19, 2021, agents from Ottawa Police Service arrested an Ottawa man at his home while executing a search warrant for drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Placed in a cell, the 49-year-old man was found that night in medical distress, before eventually succumbing to an overdose of the drug at the hospital.

L ‘Special Investigation Unit took the file to determine the cause of this death and the possible responsibility of the two police officers on the spot.

Three investigators, including a forensic scientist, were assigned to the case and performed the autopsy.

But finally, in a report made public on Tuesday, the director ofSpecial Investigation UnitJoseph Martino, indicates that he found no reasonable basis to believe that the two agents of Ottawa Police Service committed a criminal offense in connection with the death of this man while he was in cell.

Remember thatSpecial Investigation Unit is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm on a person. All investigations were conducted by investigators fromSpecial Investigation Unit civilians.
