As work to restore the church of Ontario’s oldest permanent Catholic parish continues, a team from Parks Canada is considering the possibility of making it a national historic site.

For Diego Elizondo, the Church of the Assumption represents a large part of Ontario’s history, but also Canada’s.

This is the first parish of any denomination, not just Catholic, not just Francophone, so clearly a lot of history is associated with this parish.

Diego Elizondo, project officer and head of the Built and Religious Heritage Committee of the Franco-Ontarian Heritage Network

He also added that this parish is a jewel of Canadian religious heritage because it is unique in its neo-Gothic architecture and within its structure, which is still intact.
