Metis National Council lawsuit: no defense filed by MMF

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) has not yet filed a defense to a multi-million dollar lawsuit in which the Métis National Council (MNC) alleges that the MMF caused it serious financial damage.

According to RNMits former leaders would have set up a scheme aimed at financially damaging the organization for the benefit of MMF.

ang RNM filed its case in Ontario Superior Court on January 27 against its former president, Clément Chartier, the current president of MMF and former Vice President of RNMDavid Chartrand, as well as Wenda Waytteyne, the former executive director of RNM.

So far, 15 of the 16 defendants have expressed their intention to file their defense. Wenda Watteyne did not say whether she would submit a defense.

No request to continue by default was made by RNM against the defendants.

ang RNM seeking $ 15 million in damages and $ 1 million in penalties, as well as other forms of restitution.

None of the allegations have been substantiated in court.

Neither is RNM nor the MMF declined to comment, saying the case is still in the courts.

CBC could not reach Wenda Watteyne.
