18 months after Frantz Louis was shot at point-blank range, the prime suspect, 23-year-old Andrew Thomas Labrèche, was formally charged with first-degree murder this afternoon at the Montreal courthouse.

Frantz Louis, who was followed from his residence in Blainville by the car of the shooter and an accomplice, was shot in the middle of the neighborhood in Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.

The 49-year-old, known for his links to the Italian mafia, died of his injuries upon arrival at the hospital. A few months before he died, he was arrested along with two other suspects for extortion charges.

Since the murder was not carried out in secret, several witnesses were interviewed by the police.

The gunshots, which rang out around 8:20 a.m., had the effect of alerting some neighborhood residents. So the license plate used by the two murderers to flee the scene was identified by witnesses to the murder.
