A family in the town of Saint Lawrence ToxicIxtlahuaca, in the northern State of Mexico, decided to make repairs to their home to alter a vessel and while they were digging they found an archaeological discovery: the remains of a mammoth.
The construction of the well due to lack of water caused the Morales Ordaz family, almost all masons, to make them circumstantial archaeologists. This discovery of the mammoth femur is the first in place.
The discovery happened two weeks ago and brought together many residents of the town of San Lorenzo Toxico who suggested rename the town to Toxico Mágico, Toxico del Mammut and Toxico Gigantes.
Femur is thought to be a Mammoth discovered by the Morales Ordaz family.
How they discovered a Mammoth on the patio of a house
The Morales Ordaz house is located about an hour from Toluca and next to the Toluca-Atlacomulco highway. Family members arrived in that territory 22 years ago and began visiting the area with only hillsvery little and almost no cell phone signal.
The men of Family Morales Ordaz they were masons, but two weeks ago they became archaeologists when they discovered the bones of a mammoth that could have been a femur, a mammoth or mastodon chin built 10,000 years ago.
The archeological find was covered with tarps and many villagers took turns guarding and caring for the fossils.
The pit where the search was discovered was two meters deep, about five meters wide and seven meters long. Adolfo Morales, the father of the family, was surprised that this was the first time, in his long life as a bricklayer, that something like this had happened to him.
“My whole family is comfortable because they say there is no (mammoth) anywhere and all of a sudden we found them here,” Morales told local media.
His son, Adolfo Morales Ordaz, explained that when the bone was found, they called the authorities. National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), a public organization dedicated to the investigation, conservation, protection and dissemination of Mexico’s prehistoric, anthropological, archaeological and historical cultural heritage.

The INAH of Toluca went to the family home to investigate what it was. So far, professional archaeologists have turned their interest to the municipality of Ixtlahuaca to investigate and conduct more excavations.
The mammoths that invaded Mexico
The work of a team from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) of Mexico had an important discovery in May 2020. That year They found the remains of more than 60 mammoths in the grounds of the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport, in Santa Lucía.
To make the news public, Mexico City’s Social Attorney -Patricia Ruíz Anchondo- shared some of these amazing photos showing the dimensions of these ancient creatures, They existed from about 4.8 million years ago to 3,700 years ago.
“The richness of the clues is greater than what we consider. We have over six dozen mammoths. Almost all of them are from different columbi, Colombian mammoths, and other types of fauna associated with the Pleistocene, such as bison, some camels, a small horse, ”said Pedro Francisco Sánchez Nava, INAH national Anthropology coordinator.
