Residents of Vale Island and the western channel area of ​​the Hay River are under evacuation orders due to the risk of flooding from breakup-related flooding in Hay River, NT of the North West.

The evacuation order was posted on the municipal website around 2 am Saturday morning, about 30 minutes after the local state of emergency was declared.

People leaving their homes for shelter are asked to register on the Hay River website (New window) (in English).

An evacuation center has been established at the Hay River Community Center, which will provide food and blankets. Evacuees who own a recreational vehicle or trailer can also use the space provided for this purpose at the community center, where electricity will be provided free of charge.

The City says it is monitoring the area and plans to keep the population informed of the evolution of the situation during the day.

According to Hay River resident Kevin Wallington, the order was following heavy rain and power outages that lasted until Saturday morning.
