In Saskatchewan, a Native singer celebrates an award and her motherhood

For Teagan Littlechief, recently winning the Saskatchewan Country Music Award for Aboriginal Artist of the Year was a dream come true.

The singer, who hails from White Bear First Nation in Saskatchewan, is grateful to her mother, who has always been an integral part of her musical journey.

My mother was one of the biggest influences in my lifesaid Ms. Littlechief to the host of saskatchewan weekendShauna Powers, added that her mother took her to music competitions when she was young, she saved her shows for him, and she knew all about the latest fashion trends.

He was the one who really allowed me to keep my feet on the ground with my music.

A quote from Teagan Little Chief

Her mother, Sara Littlechief, said she felt it in a cloud when he learned that his son Teagan had won the award.

We jumped everywhere, we kissed. I can not believereported Sara Littlechief in a CBC interview.

I knew he would continue to move forward. And it was just a dream. He still has many dreams to come true.

A quote from Sara Littlechief, mother of Teagan

Music has always been a passion for Teagan Littlechief. She remembers dancing in the car seat as a baby, and singing all the Disney songs.

Fight the addiction and pay for it

Teagan Littlechief is a mother herself, and is said to have struggled for years after giving birth to son Gabriel in 2011.

I was in my own addiction […] it was only until 2017 that I took my life backMs. confession. Littlechief.

Because I became sober I found myself doing so many things with my son like taking him to any class, to his hockey practice, to his baseball practice. […] all the things we celebrate together. Whereas earlier, I was celebrating holding a glass.

A quote from Teagan Little Chief

Teagan Littlechief’s mother noticed that she noticed her son’s confidence increase when he was sober.

Life changed for himcommented Sara Littlechief. Her singing is much more powerful now, and you can feel it when she sings. You will feel like he likes it.

Teagan Littlechief also graduated from an addiction counseling program, and works as a youth support worker and addictions counselor. That is why he helps people who face some of the challenges that he himself has gone through.

When we are struggling with our addictions, we always feel like we can’t bother people with what’s happening to us. We are afraid to stretch. We are afraid to ask for help.

A quote from Teagan Little Chief

This is something I clarify to my clients. And it all makes sense after a while, when I can talk to them and I just say I’m thereend of Ms. Littlechief.
