It was a fire in his home that led to the discovery of several hundred animals, many of whom were dead.

In a statement released Tuesday, Edmonton police said the 31-year-old man was charged with 37 offenses under the animal cruelty section of the Criminal Code, and 89 counts under Alberta’s Animal Protection Act.

The police statement added that the charges against the man include knowingly allowing or causing unnecessary harm to the animals he was holding and not providing them with adequate and properly ventilated shelter.

In November 2021, Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services was called to a house fire on the 20that Avenue at 112at street. They discovered nearly 700 reptiles and amphibians there. It looks like most seriously neglected and many died before the fire, the Edmonton police newspaper explained.

When we hear about animal cruelty, we almost always think of cats and dogs; but this story comes as a sad reminder of the suffering endured by many exotic reptiles at the hands of breeders and importerssaid agent Ilka Cunningham in the press release.
