About 4.9 million people are estimated to have contracted Covid-19 in the week ending March 26, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday. The latest increase is powered by BA.2, an offshoot of the ômicron variant, the Associated Press reported.

Although the number of deaths from coronavirus was relatively low compared to data from the beginning of the year, hospitalization and death rates have climbed again.

However, the latest figures show that the significant rise in infections that started in late February continued into March as Prime Minister Boris Johnson lifted all restrictions in the UK.

Germany

A scam has surfaced in Germany. In a report carried by the Associated Press, officials said a 60-year-old man appeared to have been repeatedly vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to get his vaccination records and sell them to people who refused to be vaccinated.

The German police recently carried out numerous operations against falsification of vaccination records. Daily cases in Germany have been rising for several weeks, but many restrictions were lifted on Friday. Experts say the latest wave of infections in Germany is due to the BA.2 sub-variant of omycron and it already seems to have peaked.

On Sunday, Germany’s disease control agency reported 74,053 new cases. Less than a week ago, the increase was 11,224 new cases per day.
