Attorney TJ Burke, who represents Chantel Moore’s family, announced that he will file a civil case in Edmundston Court on Tuesday, against the city of Edmundston and the police who shot Chantel Moore. The family filed for negligence after the death of the girl, who was killed by a police officer during the intervention.

The city and the police officer will have 20 days to respond to this lawsuit. This period can be extended to 30 days.

Two complaints were filed with the New Brunswick Police Commission requesting the dismissal of one officer and the suspension of another. The Commission decided not to take any action against the police officers in question. The Public Prosecution Services of the Office of the Attorney General of New Brunswick also chose not to charge the police involved.

On June 4, 2020, an Edmundston police officer went to Chantel’s home Moore , a native woman from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in British columbia, to conduct a wellness check. During this operation he was shot.

The Coroner’s inquest is about to begin

About 60 citizens were summoned for the training of jurors in the coroner’s investigation into Chantel Moore’s death. Of that number, five will be selected on Monday.

People waiting in line.

Attorney TJ Burke said he hopes this investigation will have some recommendations. In some situations, according to him, the presence of social workers, including the police, can make it possible to solve problems. He also believes that all police officers should have a Taser with them, and procedures should be reviewed.

Why are police departments putting more money into guns than that [des] less deadly weapons? Perhaps there are things like more Indigenous people in the justice systemsaid the lawyer.

TJ Burke speaks to reporters.

The facts will be presented to the jury, TJ Burke explained, and the jury must determine whether it was a homicide or a suicide.

Witness appearances

The appearance of the witnesses, which will be public, is due to begin on Monday afternoon, when the five members of the jury have already been selected.

Among the first people to be called to testify was Chantel Moore’s mother, Martha Martin. He is expected to speak on Monday afternoon.
