Police arrested a man who allegedly tried along with two other suspects to force a woman to hand over her car keys Tuesday night west of Toronto.
This situation is reminiscent of the carjacking experienced by Maple Leafs player Mitch Marner on Monday night, also in Etobicoke.
Three suspects then fled aboard Range Rover stolen, police said.
So far, investigators have not been able to establish a connection between the two incidents.
In the latest case, the victim was in the parking lot of a department store near the intersection of the Islington and Bergamot thoroughfares around 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday when three suspects approached him and stole his wallet, according to police.
They then told him to give her his car key. Police said he shouted for help and a passerby approached him to defend himself.
Toronto Police Service spokesman David Hopkinson said patrons in the parking lot caught one of the suspects and detained him until officers arrived. However, two other suspects fled.
One of them dropped a gun that was caught by the police.
Rise in flights
Toronto police have documented 60 carjackings this year, compared to a total of 59 last year.
Police have already made more than 20 arrests this year for this type of offense.
The suspects target high -value vehicles, which are usually resold for profitsaid Officer Rich Harris of the Armed Robbery Squad.
Authorities recommend drivers remain vigilant, but comply if they are threatening suspects.
