Le matin du NordThe importance of Haitian flag day. Haitians celebrate their flag on May 18, created in 1803 by Catherine Flon, but only adopted in 1820 and made official in 1843. As part of the celebration, two Franco-Ontarians of Haitian women, Junior Julcius and Christina Delva, from Sudbury, shared the importance of this symbol in the Le Matin du Nord program.

On May 18, Haitians celebrated their flag, created in 1803 by Catherine Flon, but only adopted in 1820 and made official in 1843. As part of the celebrations, two Franco-Ontarians of Haitian descent, Junior Julcius and Christina Delva, from Sudbury, shared the importance of this symbol in the Le Matin du Nord program.

Christina Delva said she feels very proud of the Haitian flag because it represents her identity.

Haitian flag day is really our pride, because a flag is what makes our identity. We fought hard for our freedom, and May 18, every year, for our Haitians, is a date we love.

Despite the challenges facing her country of origin, Christina Delva hopes the Haitian population will succeed in uniting to be reborn.

Junior Julcius shares the same opinion. For him, the motto located below the emblem, theUnity is strength, very well summarizes his feelings about this anniversary. He hopes that this day of celebration will spark a peace movement in his country.
