Sexual and domestic violence: a special court was created in Granby

A pilot project for a court that specializes in sexual and/or domestic violence was launched Monday at Granby courthouse.

Quebec’s Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barette, made the announcement along with the minister responsible for the Estrie region, François Bonnardel.

Proposed as part of Bill 92 adopted by the National Assembly in November 2021, this new type of court is intended to better meet the needs and realities of victims of sexual violence and domestic violence.

For example, courthouse spaces will be improved to make it safer and more secure for victims. So, they no longer have to meet with the accused. In addition, victims will have access to devices to help them testify, such as screens and videoconferencing rooms.

Also, it ensures that a single prosecutor will monitor the progress of the case throughout the trial and a worker from the Crime Victims Assistance Center (CAVAC) will accompany the victims throughout the process.

Training will also be provided to anyone likely to come into contact with a victim within this specialized court.

Victims should feel confident and safe on their journey. In a court that specializes in sexual violence and domestic violence, we ensure that victims are accompanied and supported by skilled workers before, during and even after the legal process. We no longer want victims in Quebec to hesitate to denounce and file a complaint.said Minister Jolin-Barette.

In addition to Granby, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec City, Drummondville and La Tuque courthouses have been selected to host these pilot projects.

The creation of these new types of courts stemmed from the adoption of Bill 92 filed by the Legault government on September 10, 2021 in response to the report. rebuild trust (New window)filed in December 2020 by the Committee of experts in support for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

The Act to create a special court for sexual violence and domestic violence was adopted by the National Assembly on November 26, 2021.
