This is a very important place for the community , said Jim MacEachern, Cambridge Bay’s chief administrative officer. He could not count the loss of the building, or even advance a date for its rebuilding.

The center is located in one of the oldest buildings in the municipality. It was renovated in 2018 thanks to $ 120,000 invested under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

It was recently renovated and all the kids are excited to be back. This is dramatic for the community.

According to Mr. MacEachern, finding a place to continue to offer youth center services such as lunch and dinner programs is now a priority.

As everyone knows, Nunavut is already lacking in youth programs, so it loses [un tel centre], grabe. We need to identify other facilities in town that could replace some of these programsadded Jim MacEachern.

In a statement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they have opened an investigation into the fire and are asking anyone with information about it to provide it.
