Ontario Provincial Police said Thursday that a 58-year-old man died after being struck by a fallen tree in a remote area of ​​the Municipality of Marble and Lakenorth-east of Peterborough.

The towns of Uxbridge and Clarence-Rockland, as well as the township of Greater Madawaska, west of Ottawa, have also declared a state of emergency.

In addition to the thousands of trees felled, power lines were damaged and extensive property damage was reported in parts of Ontario.

According to Ontario agency Hydro One, nearly 68,800 customers were still without electricity Thursday morning. Residents of the Bancroft, Perth and Tweed areas will need to be without electricity for several days, it says.

Hydro Ottawa said about 45,000 customers are without electricity, but service is expected to be restored on Friday in most cases.
